Rammed Earth
DECARBONIZING CONSTRUCTION
USING THE MARTIN RAUCH HOUSE as precedent, our team constructed a 1”=1’ mock-up model of a chosen section. We were simultaneously learning from and innovating rammed earth construction methods to showcase a successfully decarbonized High and Low tech building process. After much material exploration, we were confident in our ability to use “unstabilized” (that is, no added cement) rammed earth for the majority of the model. Our mix design included slip clay, local dirt from Union Square Park, store-bought sand, and water. Rockite was used for structural elements such as the foundation, slabs, and ring beams. Wooden lintels embedded in the earth helped support the sliding door opening.
